ABOUT ME
I am a Danish mezzo-soprano, born in 1999, originally from Jutland and now based in Copenhagen. I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Opera at The Royal Danish Academy of Opera, studying with Jens Søndergaard. In 2023 I earned my Bachelor of Music from The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, under the guidance of Signe Asmussen.
With a warm, full-bodied tone, a wide vocal range, and a strong stage presence, I enjoy performing a diverse repertoire ranging from newly composed works and baroque masterpieces to lied and opera. I made my operatic debut at The Royal Danish Theatre as Lehrbube in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, a production that was awarded Opera Production of the Year 2025 at the Danish Reumert Awards. In 2024, I appeared as Die Mutter in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel at Herning Opera Festival.
In the upcoming season at the Opera Academy, I will perform Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte, Concepción in Ravel’s L’heure espagnole, and Juno in Händel’s Semele. In 2026, I will join the cast of Verdi’s Rigoletto, performing the role of Paggio della Duchessa at the Royal Danish Opera House.
My concert appearances include Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Requiem, Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri, Händel’s Messiah, Bach’s Weihnachtsoratorium, and Duruflé’s Requiem. In 2024, I performed R. Langgaard’s Lenaustemninger with Nightingale String Quartet at Aarhus Chamber Music Festival, a concert broadcast on Danish Radio P2. Furthermore I have also appeared with Aarhus Sinfonietta in the national premiere of Marc Ducret’s Letters (2023). My future engagements include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the BBC Proms in London with the Danish National Concert Choir, and solo appearances at Herning Opera Festival, Kulturmødet Mors, and with Esbjerg Ensemble.
In 2024, klassiskbureau.com described my performance at the final concert of Aarhus Chamber Music Festival, writing: ”Julie Husballe made a strong impression with her interpretation of ‘Mariettas Lied.’ She can achieve a great deal with her voice, which is at once imposing, full-bodied, and warm. She made a striking breakthrough and received excellent support from the ensemble — we would gladly have heard her in another piece.”
Throughout my studies, I have been fortunate to learn from numerous distinguished teachers and artists, including Susanna Eken, Douglas Yates, Linda Watson, Stig Fogh Andersen, Tina Kiberg, Bodil Øland, Reinaldo Macias, and many others.
I’m grateful to have received accolades including the Feldthusens Legat Talent Award (2025), Den Almene Fond Talent Award (2025), 1st Prize at the Unge Sangere (Danish Young Singers) Competition (2019), and 3rd Prize at the International Rued Langgaard Competition (2024).
Alongside my solo career, I serve as alto in Sankt Pauls Kirke in Copenhagen, under priest Kathrine Lilleør and organist Frederik Magle. In addition to my solo work, I also enjoy ensemble singing and have performed with Holmens Vokalensemble and ÆTLA Vokalensemble. Alongside this I have been performing regularly with my Lied duo partner, Finnish pianist Sonja Honkamaa, performing together across Denmark and abroad.
I am always happy to hear about new projects and ideas, and would love to hear from you!
